The Black Rabbit

“I watch, I wait, I spy a black rabbit.”

Black Rabbit is a rare find. One Pinot Noir each vintage. Born from the Tamar Valley in Tasmania, it is the work of gifted craftspeople who share one quiet obsession — to make something truly worth seeking out.

The Black Rabbit comes to life...

The eye-catching design of the Black Rabbit has been brought to life through hand-drawn images of Fred Moschberger.

Fred Moschberger is a Hobart-based Pen & Ink artist specialising in Tasmanian wildlife. A self-taught artist, he began working with Pen & Ink in June 2017 simply to try something new and relaxing. Encouraged by the positive response to his work, he soon realised that pursuing art as a career offered both deep satisfaction and a meaningful way to share his appreciation of nature.

His work reflects a strong respect for Tasmanian flora and fauna, evident in the meticulous detail and patience he brings to his craft. In a world saturated with fast-paced digital imagery, Fred believes we must consciously slow down and take the time to observe the remarkable beauty and diversity found in nature.

Working primarily with archival inks using stippling (pointillism) and line drawing, he builds form, depth and contrast through thousands of carefully placed dots. This technique highlights intricate textures and subtle tonal variations, demonstrating how the absence of colour can become a powerful visual advantage.

Fred’s process begins with careful observation of his subject, followed by a light graphite outline before moving quickly into the permanent inking stage. The unforgiving nature of ink — where every mark is final — brings both discipline and freedom to his artistic approach.

Fred invites you to follow his artworks progression on his Instagram page where his followers the world over share in the journey of each artwork with regular updates and time-lapse videos showcasing his all “dotty” adventures along the way.

The Award Winning Design

Tasmanian designer, Demelza Rafferty, helped bring an idea into reality.

Amid the sweeping banks of Tasmania’s Tamar River lies Black Rabbit Wines, its name drawn from an unexpected visitor. A lone black rabbit often wanders the vineyard rows — quiet, watchful, elusive. Its presence sparked the phrase, “I watch, I wait, I spy a black rabbit,” which became both the label's namesake and its creative spark.

This single-varietal vineyard presented a rare design challenge: multiple vintages, all Pinot Noir, each requiring its own identity. To avoid repetition while honouring the wine's continuity, we introduced a series of bespoke rabbit illustrations — the same creature, constantly shifting in posture and movement.

With each bottle, the rabbit changes, capturing a sense of vitality and play that mirrors the living character of the vineyard itself. The approach not only distinguishes each vintage at a glance but also tells an ongoing story, giving the label charm, energy, and a quiet nod to the spirit of place.

Demelza Rafferty is a graphic designer, illustrator and creative director, and a graduate of the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. In 2018, she returned to Tasmania and established her own studio. Working with clients including the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Arts Tasmania, The Agrarian Kitchen, restaurant Scholé, and the Salty Dog. Alongside an ever-growing number of boutique Tasmanian products and vineyards such as Liminus Perfume, Ghost Rock, Atom, and Bluff Spirits, to name but a few. Her practice increasingly spans physical and conceptual work, including packaging, event and exhibition design, textile and ceramic products, and public artworks.
